Rolfing is based on the work of Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D., who developed the tecnique in the 1920s. She discovered that poor posture is a result of bones being pulled out of alignment by shortened connective tissue, or fascia, and that fascia can be lengthened by manipulation. The goal of the 10-session Rolfing series is to allow the body to move naturally into good posture by eliminating the causes of skeletal misalignments and restoring fascia to a healthy state.
The 10 Sessions
The 10 sessions are ordered, but adapted to meet unique, individual needs.
Session 1: focuses on the “body stocking,” releasing restrictions around shoulders, chest, lower back, and pelvis. This allows your ribcage to expand, reducing pressure on your heart and lungs.
Session 2: frees fascial restrictions from the feet to the knees. You will gain awareness of your walking patterns and how they affect structure and function in your body.
Session 3: releases restrictions along the sides of the body, removing tensions between the shoulders and pelvis.
Session 4: is the first deep session, bridging the surface layer work of sessions 1-3 and the core work of 4-7. Work is focused along the inner line of the legs.
Session 5: works the superficial abdominal muscles and the deeper leg/hip flexors located at the core. This releases fascial restrictions on internal organs
and provides increased mobility for the pelvis.
Session 6: addresses the back of the body, from the heels to the back of the head. Special attention is given to the muscles along the spine, all the way from the base to the top. By the end of this session, all major fascial restrictions below the neck should be released.
Session 7: integrates the work of the previous 6 sessions, and relates the head and neck to the rest of the body. Your neck may feel more mobile and your face more relaxed.
Sessions 8 and 9: focus on either the upper half or lower half of the body. The goal of these sessions is to bring your body to the next level of balance--side to side, front to back, inner to outer.
Session 10: completes the balancing and integrative process of the previous sessions. Your body is now or on its course toward
alignment. You can expect the effects of the 10-session process to continue for six months to a year, as your body continues its unique adjustment to the changes
initiated by Rolfing.
