A Rolfer who does chiropractic is how Gray Kimbrell, D.C., describes a practice that combines his expertise as an advanced certified Rolfer and doctor of chiropractic.
The Holistic Approach
You may have heard that Rolfing is just “deep tissue massage,” but the goal of Rolfing is to work with the fascial system to change body structure. Of course I am working on muscles--as well as the nervous and circulatory systems--but the work of Rolfing is to bring about a more upright, balanced body. Improved posture follows.
The Rolfing series is comprised of 10 sessions working from foot to head and back again. Each session is different and builds upon the previous work. While I am willing to work on specific problem areas, there is a synergy to the 10 sessions that provides better overall results. If you can commit to three sessions, you will have a fair sense of whether Rolfing meets your needs. It is also at this point that the focus shifts from more superficial “sleeve work” to deeper core work.
The Chiropractic Connection
Rolfing addresses primarily the fascial system, while chiropractic deals with joint function. If there is a problem with joint alignment, it is best corrected along with the fascial/muscular problem. If, during a Rolfing session, I discover any joint misalignments, you can choose whether or not you want a chiropractic adjustment.
My philosophy is to treat my chiropractic patients on an as needed basis, in other words I do not promote a standard treatment plan, but an individual one. I believe my job and my responsibilities are to get the patient out of pain, restore ROM of the affected motion units and help them get back to doing what they want to do. I encourage patients to call me when they need my services and not to wait until the condition becomes chronic. I see most chiropractic patients less than 6 times. If they are not at least 50% better at that point I believe that we need to look at other options.
